Nevada Legal Services Honors Mikye J. Miller for Pro Bono Family Law Work
MJ Miller Law · Reno, Nevada
Nevada Legal Services (NLS) recognized Mikye J. Miller as a Volunteer of the Month for pro bono work that helps low-income Nevadans reach family court. NLS thanked Mikye for supporting its mission: equal access to justice for people who cannot afford a lawyer.
That recognition reflects years of volunteer service alongside the paid family law practice at MJ Miller Law in Reno.
A Reno Family Law Practice Built Around Children First
Mikye Miller is a graduate of McGeorge School of Law with more than ten years of family law experience. MJ Miller Law accepts clients in Washoe, Lyon, Churchill, Carson City, Humboldt, and other Northern Nevada counties.
The firm was built around a clear purpose: put the needs of children first, and look for collaborative resolution whenever possible. Families are not interchangeable. The facts of each case differ. What does not change is the priority in family court—the safety and well-being of the child.
Clients often remark on Mikye’s straightforward style. Clear communication is not a slogan at a small firm. It is how a parent understands custody factors, support numbers, and what happens next.
Pro Bono Honors
Mikye’s volunteer docket with Nevada Legal Services has been recognized more than once:
- Pro Bono Attorney of the Year, Nevada Legal Services — 2012
- Pro Bono Attorney of the Year, Nevada Legal Services — 2023, for extensive work with low-income family law clients
- Nevada Legal Services – Northern Family Law Attorney Award (2022), presented at the 2023 Nevada Family Law Conference
NLS has also featured Mikye as Volunteer of the Month, noting the value of attorneys who keep showing up for clients who otherwise face family court alone.
LGBTQIA+ Advocacy and Community Work
Mikye is an at-large member of the LGBT Section of the Nevada State Bar and regularly works with Nevada Legal Services. MJ Miller Law is a LGBTQIA+ friendly firm. That work includes second-parent and non-biological parent adoptions, custody and support, dissolution of marriages and domestic partnerships, legal name changes, and corrected birth certificates.
The same values that guide volunteer cases—integrity, compassion, and the child’s welfare—guide paying client matters in Reno and across Northern Nevada.
What This Means for Families Hiring MJ Miller Law
Pro bono work is not separate from how the firm practices. Low-income family law cases involve the same statutes Reno parents see every day: custody under NRS 125C.0035, child support under NAC 425, guardianship when a parent cannot meet a child’s basic needs, and divorce or partnership dissolution when a household has to be unwound.
Families who hire MJ Miller Law get a small-firm attorney who already spends significant time in those same courtrooms, including matters referred through NLS.
