Reno Family Law Practice Areas
We assist clients with all types of family law matters in Nevada family court.
Divorce and Legal Separation
Divorce is never part of the plan. Even if you and your partner are on good terms about ending the marriage, you should seek legal counsel. When dividing assets and debts, determining child custody, and arranging alimony or child support, it is important to have an attorney advise you on these sensitive issues.
Mikye J. Miller has over ten years of family law experience. Reach out today so we can answer your questions and help you develop a plan for the dissolution of your marriage.
Child Custody in Reno
As a parent, your child’s safety and well-being are always your primary concern. Family law judges similarly focus on the best interest of the child when making custody decisions.
Nevada’s best interest factors—found in NRS 125C.0035—outline what the Court considers. At MJ Miller Law, we help you understand those factors and how each applies to your specific situation.
Minor Guardianships & Grandparent Visitation
A minor guardianship is sought when parents cannot meet the basic needs of their children. A legal guardian—such as a grandparent or adult relative—temporarily assumes the role of the parent and has the right to make decisions for the child.
Whether you want to initiate a guardianship to protect a child or terminate a guardianship because you are able to care for your children, we can help. Mikye has taken multiple guardianships to trial with successful outcomes.
Child Support
Child support can be one of the most contentious parts of a divorce. Calculations are set by statute under NAC 425. The Court looks at both parties’ gross income—but what counts as gross income? Do bonuses count? Does overtime count? What happens if there is a significant change in income?
Speak with an experienced Reno family law attorney to determine what is and is not considered income for child support purposes.
LGBTQIA+ Family Matters
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Mikye J. Miller is a passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+ families. Nevada treats domestic partnerships like marriages, and the process for dissolving a partnership is identical to dissolving a marriage—including assets, debts, partner alimony, child custody, and child support.
Gender-diverse individuals can also seek legal name changes and corrected birth certificates that reflect their gender identity. LGBTQIA+ rights vary state to state, so it is important to talk with an attorney who understands how to protect you and your family.
